I coordinated with photographers, web production and editors while in the field. And, I’ve cold-called and door-knocked witnesses, victims, and businesses for interviews.

The bulk of my work for this Austin, Texas suburban monthly newspaper included: coming up with story budgets and assignments, writing news stories primarily centered on city and county government, and line-editing and copy-editing stories from reporters. I also shot photos for my stories, wrote headlines and cut-lines, selected story placement in the newspaper, and packaged stories for online publication.

In this job, I verified trending news authenticity, accuracy and newsworthiness. I wrote headlines and summaries for major news items nationally and internationally that were then displayed to millions of Facebook users. I also ensured that trending news items I worked on adhered to strict news values with integrity.
For full disclosure, my job as a part of the editorial branch at Facebook’s New York offices later led to controversial stories and coverage that resulted in interviews on how fake news proliferated throughout the social media site. I had to break an NDA to disclose the journalistic practices we undertook in providing this editorial service to Facebook users, including combating fake news.

I set story budgets and gave assignments to freelancers and contributors, as well as copyedited and line-edited all content when it was received. I also wrote news stories and shot photos, prepared all content for print and web publication, and helped guide the paper in its web and social growth.

I produced a weekly tabloid insert called neighborsgo that was included with The Dallas Morning News home deliveries for southern Denton and northwest Dallas Counties. The publication, which averaged 40 pages per week, no longer exists but included stories on local government, breaking news, business, entertainment and sports . I wrote stories, edited staff and contributor stories, and packaged stories for print and online publication. I also shot photos and videos, and produced graphics with the paper’s designer. On weekends, I took extra breaking news and general assignment shifts at the DMN covering major news across the North Texas area.

In this extended internship, I created lists for the DBJ Book of Lists and weekly publications by researching company information and financial statements. I also helped design surveys provided to area businesses and assisted the research editor in writing analyses of the results. I connected with industry experts to result information accuracy and relevance. I also helped the publication grow its online presence.

I was a paid intern at the nonprofit’s national headquarters and was involved with copy-writing, editing and promoting scientific news content. I also assisted in maintaining and auditing its social media presence and helped produce a comedic scientific web series.
